Biography Dr. Neil McKinney is a highly respected Canadian naturopathic physician and one of the leading voices in integrative cancer care. A graduate of Simon Fraser University with a degree in Biosciences, he began his career in biophysical (radiation) cancer research before studying kinesiology at the University of Waterloo and earning his Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1985. He also completed three years of training in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. Since entering clinical practice in 1985, Dr. McKinney has specialized in naturopathic oncology while maintaining a broad practice supporting patients with a wide range of chronic conditions. He is a founder of the British Columbia Naturopathic Association and the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine, where he has served as Professor of Naturopathic Oncology. Internationally recognized as a teacher and mentor, he has lectured to physicians and naturopathic students worldwide on the safe, evidence-informed integration of natural therapies with conventional cancer treatment. His work bridges rigorous scientific research with practical clinical experience. He is the author of multiple authoritative texts, most notably the multi-edition Naturopathic Oncology: An Encyclopedic Guide for Patients & Physicians, along with Naturally There's Hope and Naturally There's Always Hope. These books cover supportive care during surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation; natural health products (herbs, nutrients, botanicals) used in cancer management; strategies for reducing side effects and improving quality of life; and evidence-based approaches to inflammation control, immune support, and metabolic therapies. His philosophy emphasizes true integrative care: working alongside conventional oncology to enhance outcomes rather than replace standard treatments.
Notes Dr. McKinney's extensive clinical knowledge and encyclopedic writings have been an important reference in building the herbal and natural-medicine database on forager.com and usbm.ca. His detailed documentation of botanicals, nutritional protocols, and integrative strategies used in oncology helped shape many evidence-informed entries and formulas in this system. Reference #36 in this library is his book: Naturopathic Oncology: An Encyclopedic Guide for Patients and Physicians (ISBN 978-0-9865280-0-7).
